LENS OPTIONS WITH CATARACT SURGERY

When you decide to to undergo cataract operation, you will be faced with several choices. While cataract surgery has advanced tremendously in recent years, most of the advances have had to do with transformation of cataract surgery from a medical procedure to a refractive procedure, i.e. not only to remove the opacity, but to offer the best quality possible eyesight suitable for each individual. Cataract surgery can now allow patients to completely eliminate dependence on glasses for distance, near and/or intermediate. Patients who had astigmatism all their lives can be implanted with specially designed lenses which can eliminate their astigmatism (toric intraocular lenses).
There are a variety of intraocular lenses (IOLs) that can be used in cataract surgery, and they each have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. No single IOL works best for everyone. Dr Khalil will discuss with you which intraocular lens options and vision enhancements are available for your particular case.

At the time of cataract surgery other procedures can be performed simultaneously to eliminate and/or reduce Astigmatism, presbyopia, Farsightedness and Nearsightedness

Dr Khalil will help you make the best decision for your case, taking into account your lifestyle demands and hobbies as well and any other limitations.

Standard Monofocal Intraocular Lenses

clearest vision at a set distance
are used in the majority of cataract procedures. These lenses have the advantage of excellent quality distance vision under a variety of lighting conditions. Since these lenses have a fixed focal point which is generally set for distance vision, reading glasses are typically required for good near vision.

Toric Intraocular Lenses

FOR ASTIGMATISM CORRECTION
This is a monofocal IOL with astigmatism correction built into the lens, which correct the pre-existing astigmatism without the need to resort to furtherr refractive surgery or the necessity of glasses. People with significant degrees of astigmatism are usually most satisfied with toric IOLs.

Multifocal (Bifocal) Intraocular Lenses

Reading and far distances

These newer IOL types reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. In this type, a series of focal zones or rings is designed into the IOL. Depending on where incoming light focuses through the zones, the person may be able to see both near and distant objects clearly.

Trifocal Intraocular Lenses

Near, Intermediate, and Far distances
is the most reading development in the intraocular lens field. The new trifocal lenses offer an optimal vision for mid-distance vision as well (e.g. computer, car dashboard, objects located at 60-80cm) with minimal side effects such as halos around light sources at night.
